I became aware of Darius Foroux's post through a tweet that linked to a post by «Il Libraio» which in turn published an infographic by Darius that the author created to summarize his article on how to read 100 books the year . A nice ride, but in the end it's the result that counts. Is it really necessary to read 100 books a year? Yes and no, I should say. And instead I say yes, from my point of view. Reading 100 books a year is a goal I have set for myself, but for specific reasons. Even if personal. I'm still a long way from reaching that goal. Between 2011 and 2015 I read an average of 46 and a half books a year, with a peak in 2012 when I read 61 and a minimum in 2013 when I dropped to 30. This year – at the time of writing at least – I have read 35 books.
Two are currently being read, one of which is almost finished and the other recently started. On «Goodreads» I set my “2016 Reading Challenge” to 70 books. If I continue with this average I should be able to read the 70 that I "imposed" on myself. Because I would like to read 100 books a year I said that I have personal reasons for trying to succeed in this endeavor. A feat that I would Special Data then have to replicate in the years following the victory of this challenge. The main reason why I would like to read 100 books a year – which may even seem macabre to some – is that I would like to read all the books I have before I pass away . Yes, before the curtain of life closes on my stage and I leave the stage forever.
The problem is that I buy books all the time . I'm about to hit 2000 and I can't remember how many of the ones I've read. Some of the ones I read are my mother's and I read them as a boy, others I sold. I still have to calculate how many I have left to read among those I have. At a guess, there should still be over 1200 books that I have yet to read. Many, I would say. Reading 100 a year - and assuming I don't buy any more (something to be ruled out a priori, I already have 2 ordered and on the way) -, I would finish them in 12 years. With the current average I would instead finish them in double the time, i.e. in 24 years. Are you sure that in 24 years I will still be here? I can not know that. which I started doing a while ago.
